I asked my kids the other night which of all the teachings of Jesus was their favourite. It was clear almost immediately that they didn’t know, at least not off the top of their heads. This makes me just a little sad as a parent – am I doing a good job? Within a few moments, however, Lilli began to sing and then Kirsten and soon Jaron followed. This is the song they sang:
1. I’m trying to be like Jesus;
I’m following in his ways.
I’m trying to love as he did, in all that I do and say.
At times I am tempted to make a wrong choice,
But I try to listen as the still small voice whispers,
2. I’m trying to love my neighbor;
I’m learning to serve my friends.
I watch for the day of gladness when Jesus will come again.
I try to remember the lessons he taught.
Then the Holy Spirit enters into my thoughts, saying:
Chorus: “Love one another as Jesus loves you.
Try to show kindness in all that you do.
Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,
For these are the things Jesus taught.”
This really is a beautiful song. I dare you to listen to your kids break into this song and not cry! I of course didn’t cry but I’m tough like that. For those who haven’t heard it you can listen to it here:
I asked the kids what it meant to love one another and they soon gave me a list:
- asking people their name
- remembering their name
- playing with people
- being kind
- obeying parents
- obeying Heavenly Father
- Making new friends
- Smiling at people
- Invite people over to watch a movie
- sharing your toys
This little experience has me deeply grateful for all the people who have taught my children in Sunday School. So as we approach the celebration of the birth of Christ I will do a little more to love others. Even if that is simply remembering to smile.
